What Is Bojin? How It Differs From Gua Sha and Tui Na

If you have been recommended “Bojin” by a friend in Singapore and are not quite sure what it is — or how it differs from the gua sha your aunt does at home, or the tui na massage down the road — this is the short, honest explanation.
What Bojin actually is
Bojin (拨筋) is a traditional Chinese hands-on technique. The therapist uses a smooth, hand-held tool — usually shaped from horn, jade or a similar dense material — and draws it along the body’s meridians, the channels through which, in traditional Chinese wellness, Qi and blood are understood to move.
The word itself is a good description of the method. Bo (拨) means to pluck, flick or push aside; jin (筋) refers to the sinews and soft tissue. So Bojin is, quite literally, working through the soft tissue rather than simply pressing on top of it.
Where a channel is congested, you feel it as tightness, soreness, or a heaviness that a good night’s sleep does not fix. The therapist works those areas with steady, directed pressure to ease the congestion, encourage blood circulation and support lymphatic drainage.
Bojin vs gua sha vs tui na
These three get confused constantly, including by people who have had all of them. The simplest way to separate them is by what the practitioner is trying to reach.
- Gua sha (刮痧) — a flat tool scraped repeatedly across the skin surface in broad strokes. The aim is to raise sha (the temporary red speckling) and release heat. It is fast, superficial and covers large areas.
- Tui na (推拿) — a hands-only massage system: pushing, kneading, rolling, grasping. It works muscle bulk and joints, usually without a tool.
- Bojin (拨筋) — a tool used with precision along specific lines and points, working into the sinew and fascia rather than across the skin. Slower, more targeted, and noticeably more specific in where it is felt.
In practice: gua sha is broad and surface-level, tui na is broad and muscular, Bojin is narrow and deep. That is why a Bojin session on one area — a back, a pair of legs, a face — takes 50 to 80 minutes rather than ten.
On the body
Body Bojin is what most people come in for. It is used along the shoulders and upper back for desk-bound tension, around the waist and abdomen, along the legs for that heavy swollen feeling after long hours standing, and around the underarm for lymphatic work.
The sensation is a firm, purposeful ache that loosens as the session goes on — most guests describe it as a “good ache” rather than pain. At RENEU each body treatment runs 50 minutes at $68, and you can take any two for $98 nett.
On the face
Facial Bojin is much finer work. The same principle — release, drain, encourage flow — but with lighter, more controlled strokes along the facial meridians. It is used to reduce puffiness, relax held tension in the jaw and brow, and bring back definition that a tired face loses.
Our Rejuvenation Bojin Facial combines that technique with professional facial care in one 80-minute session, at $58 nett.
Who it suits — and who should check first
Bojin suits most healthy adults, and it is particularly popular with people who sit at a desk all day, stand all day, or simply cannot get their shoulders to drop.
Do speak to your doctor first, and tell your therapist, if you are pregnant, on blood-thinning medication, have a bleeding disorder, have recently had surgery or an aesthetic procedure, or are managing a skin condition in the area to be treated.
One thing we will always be straight about: Bojin is a wellness treatment, not a medical one. It does not cure conditions and we will never tell you it does. What it does well is what most people actually walk in for — less tightness, better circulation, a lighter body and a brighter face.
