Does Bojin Hurt? Will It Leave Marks? An Honest Answer

This is the question that stops most people from booking. So here is the straight answer, without the marketing gloss: yes, you will feel it — and where you feel it most is usually the part that needed it most.

What it actually feels like

Bojin is not a relaxation massage. The therapist draws a smooth tool along the meridians with steady, directed pressure, working into the sinew rather than gliding over it.

Across healthy, loose tissue you will feel firm pressure and not much else. Then the tool reaches somewhere congested — the knot under your right shoulder blade, the band down the outside of your calf — and the sensation changes sharply. Most guests describe it as a “good ache”: intense, very specific, and oddly satisfying. It fades within a second or two of the tool moving on.

The useful thing about that reaction is that it is information. Your therapist reads it too. Where you flinch tells them where to spend the session.

Why some spots hurt far more than others

People often assume the therapist suddenly pressed harder. Usually they did not — the pressure was the same, the tissue was different.

Congested areas are tighter, less mobile and more sensitive. Long hours at a desk, a phone held at chest height, old injuries, standing all day in flat shoes — these build up in predictable places. The first session tends to be the most eventful for exactly this reason. Regular guests almost always report that sessions two and three feel noticeably milder, because there is simply less congestion to work through.

Will it leave marks?

Sometimes, yes — and it is normal.

You may see light redness immediately after, which usually settles within a few hours. In more congested areas you may see sha — temporary reddish or purplish speckling under the skin. It looks more dramatic than it feels.

A few honest points about sha:

  • It typically fades within three to seven days, sometimes a little longer on the back.
  • More sha does not mean a better treatment, and no sha does not mean the session did not work.
  • It is not a bruise from impact — it is a response to the tissue work.
  • If you have an event, a photoshoot or a beach holiday in the next week, say so when you book. We will keep the pressure lighter, or work areas your outfit covers.

You control the pressure — please use it

This is the part guests most often forget. Our therapists check in as they go, but they cannot feel what you feel. If something is too much, say so immediately — “lighter here” is all it takes, and no therapist will be offended.

Some useful guidance for calibrating: a sensation you can breathe through is productive. A sensation that makes you hold your breath, clench, or grip the bed is too much. There is no prize for enduring more pressure, and tensing up actually works against the treatment.

Who should be more careful

Please tell your therapist before the session, and check with your doctor first, if you are pregnant, taking blood-thinning medication, have a bleeding or clotting disorder, bruise very easily, have had recent surgery or an aesthetic procedure, or have varicose veins, eczema, sunburn or broken skin in the area to be treated.

None of these automatically rule you out — but they change how we work, and we would much rather know.

Afterwards

  • Drink water. More than you think you need, for the rest of the day.
  • Keep the area warm and avoid a cold shower straight after.
  • Skip the heavy meal, alcohol and the gym for a few hours.
  • Expect to feel it tomorrow — a mild post-exercise soreness for a day or so is common, particularly after a first session.
Does Bojin hurt?
You will feel firm pressure throughout, and a sharper “good ache” wherever a channel is congested. It is intense but brief, easing as soon as the tool moves on. Pressure is adjusted to your comfort at any point during the session.
How long do sha marks last after Bojin?
Light redness usually settles within a few hours. Sha — temporary reddish or purplish speckling in congested areas — typically fades within three to seven days, sometimes slightly longer on the back.
Does more sha mean the treatment worked better?
No. The amount of sha varies with the individual and the area, and it is not a measure of how effective the session was. No sha does not mean nothing happened.
Can I ask for lighter pressure?
Yes, at any time, and you should. A sensation you can breathe through is productive; one that makes you hold your breath or tense up is too much and works against the treatment.
What should I do after a Bojin session?
Drink plenty of water, keep the treated area warm, avoid a cold shower immediately after, and skip heavy meals, alcohol and intense exercise for a few hours. Mild soreness the next day is normal, especially after a first session.
